JAMES MOLLOY
After many years of working in commercial and technical illustration, Jim Molloy has turned off his computer, picked up his brush, and returned to his true love of painting in oil. Mostly self-taught, he has learned to paint by studying the work of old masters, impressionistic and post-impressionistic painters, and by working with contemporary illustrators and artists. Jim draws his inspiration from the many scenic and historic sites that are the foundation of the landscape of Long Island and New England. He enjoys getting out of the studio to see, absorb and paint those scenes, recently spending time painting in Plein Air on Nantucket and Long Island. Jim's work is a mixture of the realism from the world he sees around him and fantasy from his inner sight. A native of Long Island, Jim lives in Miller Place, NY with his wife Susan.
Jim is a member of The Long Island Plein Air Painters Society (www.lipaps.com) and the Salmagundi Club of New York (www.salmagundi.org)
Artist's Statement
I like to think that my work is a mixture of realism and surrealism, providing an image of the world the way that I see it, bringing my own interpretation into the painting. I want to capture the feeling from a scene, not just what's physically there, but also the intangibles. Color and form are important to me, as are light and shadow, as these help bring emotion, feeling and life to a canvas. When people look at my work, I want them to imagine being in the scene, sharing my feelings and bringing their own thoughts and imaginations to life.
